You will practice interpreting data and applying it to topics relevant to this module. You will use the U.S. Census Bureau’s QuickFacts data to learn the racial and ethnic makeup of the United States and your home state.
Instructions
- Write a brief paragraph summarizing what you imagine the racial and ethnic make-up of the United States and your home state (Georgia) to be. Do this before proceeding through the next steps.
- Go to the U.S. Census QuickFacts website. In the search box, enter your home state (Georgia). This will show the statistics for your home state and the United States.
- Create a table showing race and Hispanic origin statistics for the United States and your home state (Georgia) from the U.S. Census. Copy and paste your table into a document. Write a brief paragraph comparing the racial/ethnic percentages of your state with the United States overall. Were some groups larger or smaller in your state compared to the United States? Explain.
Your chart should look similar to this:
Race/Origin | New Jersey | United States |
White, alone | 71.9 | 76.3 |
Black or African American alone | 15.1 | 13.4 |
American Indian and Alaska Native alone
Asian alone | ||
Native Hawaiian and Other Pacific Islander alone
Two or more races | ||
Hispanic or Latino | ||
White alone, not Hispanic or Latino |
- Were you surprised by the size of any racial or ethnic groups in the United States or in your state? Explain.
