Coming from the perspective of your selected theory, plan a parent education workshop for your designated family population (8 families). You must consider the family characteristics written on the cards and focus on the needs of the culture, socioeconomic environment, educational status, and special circumstances associated with your designated population. Your task is to design an educational workshop that will teach parents something about a topic that is relevant specifically to their needs. Remember, this particular group of parents has several things in common. Your goal is to help them learn about a particular concept that will help them assist their preschool child in some way in their everyday life. You must design the workshop from the perspective of the designated theory chosen for your assignment.
With your group will create a PowerPoint presentation outline that includes the information listed below.
Create a visually appealing outline of your parent workshop PLAN. Include the following:
Needs:
- Identify each of the (6) characteristics of the parent group. Explain how each one of the characteristics is significant in the child’s life.
- What background information is needed to serve this population effectively. What do you know or what do you need to find out about each of the characteristics of this group of parents?
- What is a topic this particular group will benefit from learning about? Why is this relevant to this parent group and their children (rational for the topic)? What topic/skill will you teach and why?
Theory and Topic:
- Explain the chosen theory. How does the theory connect to the topic or the group of parents? Include the nature of the child, role of the parent, and specific strategies in your explanation. This should be in your own words – do not copy from presentation slides. Refer to your theory matrix form.
Parent Education Workshop Format: (Remember, you are planning for 8 families)
- Planning for the workshop – content – what is the workshop goal and specific objectives? State clearly what you expect parents to get from this workshop.
- What information, strategies associated with your theory will you consider as you plan your workshop?
- Who will be involved in presenting or organizing the workshop? Explain.
- What will be the format of your workshop?? (Speakers, videos, discussions, activities, breaks, food, …..)
- Materials – what materials will you need to meet the objective? Parent needs – anything this particular group of parents may need??
- Budget – what will the parent workshop cost? Where will the money come from?
- Advertising for the workshop – what, when, where, why – how do you get parents to attend? Motivators? Incentives?
Evaluating the Workshop:
- Goals, objectives, how do you measure success?? Remember, you will need tangible data. How will you know the workshop is successful and that parents benefitted from it?
- What topic will you plan for a follow-up parent education class? Why?
Presentation of the Plan: You will not present the content of the workshop – you will only present the plan for organizing and conducting the workshop.
