Discussion – What Is Wrong with KFC’s Edible Nail Polish?
Instructions:
This discussion aligns with MO 5.4 (identify the factors contributing to the success or failure of a new product or service) and MO 5.5 (apply the steps required to bring a new product to market).
Every year, there are a lot new products launched to the market but many of them fail. Chapter 10 (Product Decisions) discusses several general key factors that cause a product’s success or failure. Please read this article (“With Edible Nail Polish, KFC Has Taken ‘Finger Lickin Good’ Where No One Expected (Links to an external site.)“) about KFC’s new edible flavorful nail polished that were launched in HK market in 2016. Interestingly, all the Google search results do not have any follow up of this product. Personally, I have friends in HK who cannot find this product anymore. It is safe to conclude that it is a product failure. Feel free to do more research about this nail polish launch. Then based on what you learned from Chapter 10, discuss:
- What are the major reasons KFC’s edible nail polish failed? Please identify at least one critical reason.
- If you were KFC’s product manager, what would you do differently to increase the likelihood that the product would have been successful? Why?
Submission Instructions:
