Before registering, students must complete a Proposal for Independent Study Service Learning. The proposal should contain the following:
- Service/Civic Learning Meta-Question
What is the big question related to issues of social justice, diversity, compassion, systemic inequity, social responsibility, and service that relates to your discipline that you wish to examine.
- Learning Outcomes
Identify 2-4 learning resources (books, articles, videos, etc.) that will help you develop insights related to each of the four Service Learning Learning Outcomes. (See SL Learning Outcomes: Upper Division for details.)
- Self and Social Awareness
Students deepen their understanding and analysis of the social, cultural and civic aspects of their personal and professional identities.
- Service and Social Responsibility
Students deepen their understanding of the social responsibility of professionals in their field or discipline, and analyze how their professional activities and knowledge can contribute to greater long-term societal well-being.
- Community & Social Justice
Students evaluate how the actions of professionals and institutions in their field or discipline foster both equity and inequity in communities and society.
- Multicultural Community Building/Civic Engagement
Students learn from and work responsively and inclusively with diverse individuals, groups and organizations to build more just, equitable, and sustainable communities
- Learning Resources
Including the above resource provide a list of 10 books or articles that will provide you information related to your learning objectives. Briefly annotate each and explain how each source informs your understanding of your learning outcomes.
- Community Service Objectives
Identify the organization that you will be working with. Include the name of your supervisor at the organization and contact information.
Describe the service activities that you will be involved with. Describe how you will be able to accomplish the required number of service hours during the semester.
- Reflection Plan
How will you reflect on and document your learning during the semester? Will you keep a critical reflection journal? What will be the focus of your writing and reflecting? How will you connect theory, experience, and service? How will you document learning related to your learning outcomes?
Propose three dates that you will turn in your “reflections,” including summaries of the books and articles that you will be reading.
- Final Portfolio Contents
- Reflection journals
- Three (3) 3-5 page papers addressing Upper Division Service Learning Outcomes #1, #2 and #3. (Include references to appropriate readings, books, etc.)
- One (1) 5-10 page paper examining your “Meta-Question” and providing insights related to Service Learning Outcome #4. (Include references to appropriate readings, books, etc.)
- Any products that you have produced during your service time.
- Any other evidence of learning you would like to include.
