Research Utilization Project Assignment Guidelines
The purpose of this assignment is to introduce a process that provides a foundation for evidence based nursing practice. It is designed to prepare students for their leadership in instituting research utilization in clinical settings. This project provides students an opportunity to develop their skills in critically appraising the clinical applicability and scientific merit of studies that comprise the research base for selected clinical problems and to posit a protocol for implementation.

Note: AHRQ has shut down access to the clinical guidelines from their site. You need to go to a data base or google and type in “clinical guidelines” for an area of interest and go from there for the Research Utilization Assignment.
This assignment is to be presented as a PowerPoint Presentation.
- Select a clinical topic.
- Identify and select ONE clinical guideline related to the clinical topic. Summarize the guideline in one or two slides . Appraise the selected clinical guideline using the AGREE-II instrument found in the Course Documents in D2L and provide a succinct statement, not an involved point by point evaluation. Synthesize your evaluation and identify whether the guideline met the criteria and the areas of merit—bullet points are fine.
- Determine if the clinical guideline is appropriate for adoption and/or implementation in your hypothetical situation.
- Develop a detailed plan (or protocol) for utilization of the guideline in your hypothetical clinical setting following the Iowa Model of Utilization- use it as an organized guide, but do not need to refer to the model or identify each step. In detail, clearly describe the planned intervention/protocol. Describe how you would determine eligibility for patients/clients. Describe the plan using step-by-step instructions that a practicing professional would use to implement the intervention in a clinical setting. Discuss the barriers to implementation. Develop a plan for evaluation of the practice change. What criteria will be used to determine whether the protocol was effective and should be adopted on a more permanent basis? What are your proposed outcomes and how will you measure them? What is the cost/benefit ratio. Discuss how or if you would modify the guideline to your hypothetical clinical situation.
- Submit the PPT presentation to the appropriate D2L Dropbox.
Decide on the specific clinical problem you wish to address (or from the selected list). Hypothetically identify the Population (you are interested in– gender, age, living situation etc.) and the setting (acute care, nursing home, clinic, etc.) in which the Intervention to address the problem will be implemented. You can use AGREE-II instrument found in Course Documents as a guide for evaluation of the guideline.
