Summer 2022

Any papers not turned in on the due date by midnight will not be graded.

A grade of zero will be entered as the grade on this assignment.

NO LATE PAPERS WILL BE ACCEPTED

This paper is worth 100 points. Components of the paper are:

  • There should be a cover sheet with the title of the report, date, the name of the author and the class.
  • The main report should contain a clearly labeled Introduction section, Results section, Discussion/Conclusion section and References.
  • It should be written in APA bibliography format.
  • Length of paper does not matter
  • Proper formatting with bacteria names: i.e. Corynebacterum xerosis (italicized, Genus capitalized, species lowercase)
  • 1 ½ line spacing, approximatey 14 pt type font, proper grammar, punctuation, spelling, number pages.

Preparation of Paper

Cover Page – as stated the cover page or sheet should contain the title of the report, date, the name of the author and the class. Examples are below

Introduction

  • In paragraph format
  • The introduction should contain a statement of purpose of the project
  • State the objective of your work and why it is important.
  • Give a brief overview of the method of investigation.

Example below:

The objective of this experiment is to determine the microorganism from an unknown culture. The unknown given is Unknown 2. A series of biochemical test were performed to find the name of the unknown. Scientist often perform such test when there an outbreak in communities etc……….

Results

  • Explain what really happened in your experiment.
  • You should write a general overview.
  • This should be a well – designed table that contains the:
    •  experiment names
    •  Observation
    • Actual Results
    • Interpretation
  • In other words, explain/Interpret what the results mean or indicate

Examples below:

After the incubation of the inoculums in all different media for 48 hrs at 37 C, the next step was to study the morphology and physiological characteristics of the colonies.  The gram stain shows characteristics of coccus gram positive.  The rest of the biochemical characteristics are going to be described in the following table.

Below is an example of how to organize your table.  The table should list ALL experiments, actual results and interpretation therefore the example below should be at least a full page.

TEST OBSERVATIONRESULTSINTERPRETATION
Starch Blue-black colorNegativeDid not hydrolyze starch.
Lipid No change in colorNegativeDid not hydrolyze lipids

Discussion/Conclusion

  • Clearly explain how results were used to identify and microorganism.  These are usually the experiments that led you to your answer.
  • Relate results to physiological characteristics of the microorganism.
  • Explain all experimental errors.
  • Include an additional short paragraph discussing any alternative possible identification species, just in case, and why.
  • Conclusion paragraph identifying the microorganism.
  • Give some background on your microorganism (diseases, history, vaccines, treatment, epidemics… etc etc)

Example below:

The principal features of the Corynecbacterium  is describe as a gram positive catalase positive. The grams stain show similar like the picture above. The first time gram stain was made, was when we were given our unknown. The second time was after we inoculate our specimen and put for incubation for 48 hrs at 37 C. The first time was not clear about the morphology, but was obvious a gram positive cocci, because the color purple. The result from the second gram stain the morphology was a little bit better about the cocci, but still not clears the morphology for rods.

The Corynecbaterium spp, can be catalase positive or negative, at that point the unknown was catalase (+), with NO2 reduccion. The following biochemical reactions were negative. Lactose, H2S, Indole production, citrate use, oxidase activity gelatin liquefaction and starch hydrolysis. With the analysis from the result mentioned above the unknown is Corynebacterum xerosis.
