You are a federal judge, and you are a member of the joint commission of federal judges, which has been tasked by the Office of the President of the United States of America to look at several key issues related to the severity of sentencing. Of the utmost importance is the review of the sentencing guidelines related to crimes that are perceived to be civil in nature but receive criminal sanctions (e.g., undocumented entry into the U.S., use of illegal drugs, and tax evasion). You were elected to the research subcommittee on the joint commission. You were also elected to chair the research subcommittee. Your committee has been asked to 1) compile a list of the various types of offenses that are perceived to be civil in nature yet received criminal sanctions, 2) compile the relevant statistics, and 3) develop a way to present those statistics in a simplistic manner to the entire joint commission. Discuss how you would complete the assigned tasks.
