Answer ONE of the following questions. in a coherent, well-organized essay. These are compound questions, so be sure to answer each part of the question you select. Your answer should be 2-3 pages, double-spaced. Before writing your essay, I suggest writing an outline of your answer or a list of the major points you want to cover. That will help you organize your essay and should not be turned in with your exam. Be sure to proofread your answer.
1. What is sustainability? Choose one of the films we watched in class and write an essay that (i) summarizes the most important thing you learned from the film about a specific challenge or threat to sustainability; and (ii) describes what you think the U.S. government should do to address it.
2. In his book, Development and Social Change, Philip McMichael concludes that we need to “rethink development.” What are the major trends identified by McMichael in support of that conclusion? Do you agree with McMichael? Why or why not?
3. In his book, Water,David Lewis Feldman identifies a number of threats to freshwater sustainability. What are the major threats identified by Feldman? Discuss one of the threats identified by Feldman, and what you think should be done to address it.
4. What is sustainable development? In your view, what are the most important principles that underlie international agreements to promote sustainable development? Why are they important to sustainable development? Your answer should include a discussion of at least two of the principles in the 1992 Rio Declaration on Environment and Development.
