Assignment #2: Over the Counter Oral Health Product Evaluation
The students will establish small groups (3-4 people per group).
Each group will be assigned one of the following over the counter product topic:
- Products for dentinal hypersensitivity
- Motorized toothbrushes
- Manual toothbrushes
- Dentifrices for caries protection
- Dentifrices for reduction of gingivitis
- Floss
- Alternative interdental cleaning products
- (tooth picks)
- Mouthwashes for caries protection
- Mouthwashes for reduction of gingivitis
- Whitening products
- Denture care products
- Denture adhesives
- Other: eg. Herbal toothpaste
Each group will visit a local pharmacy (look for a pharmacy that carries a wide variety of dental products) and identify the products available in their assigned category (compare 3-5 products)
For each product the group will compare the following:
- name of the product
- price
- active ingredient / or mechanism of action (if applicable)
- Canadian Dental Association seal of approval (yes/no)
Research each product utilizing credible sources and make conclusions as to which of the products you may or may not recommend to clients. Explain and justify the decisions regarding the recommendations.
Submit for marking:
- A report of the findings above
- Photocopy of the research articles (article from journal, textbook , website, etc.) supporting evidence to support recommending
- Reference page (APA format)
- Evaluation Rubric
The group will present their findings to the rest of the class in an oral / visual presentation.
