Other FAQs:

Q: What if I can’t find any sources to answer some of the questions in the assignment instructions?

A: The questions are designed as prompts to help you think about each section.  You do not necessarily have to answer EVERY question in each section of the assignment.

Q: Can my paper be longer than 8 pages (10 pages including the title page and bibliography)?

A: Please stick to the 6-8 page length (8-10 pages including title page and bibliography).  There is a lot of information out there so edit it down to what you think is the best and most relevant info.

Q: This feels like a pretty simple assignment.  Are we just writing a report on our country?

A: No! This is a research and analysis paper.  With an emphasis on ANALYSIS. Do enough research to present key facts and focus your efforts on analyzing their importance.  Do not waste time going down rabbit holes looking for very specific data points (e.g., how many tanks did Egypt have in 1966…probably not a necessary data point to track down in this assignment).

To help you with your analysis, here are some key questions you should come back to throughout your paper are:

  • What sets this country apart from others in the region?
  • How does this factor (geography, economic, etc.) affect this country’s development?
  • Where does this country derive its power from?

Your Mid-Term paper is a 6-8 page (plus title page and bibliography for a total of 8-10 pages) research and analysis paper on the factors that have contributed to a particular country’s development in the 20th century.  Limit your research and analysis to ~1890 thru ~1989 (pre-WWI thru the end of the Cold War).  Your Mid-Term paper will consist of five major areas:

  •
    • Introduction – Geographic and Historical Factors. When was your country established and when did it gain independence?  What preceded its establishment/independence?  Was it part of another nation or empire?  Was it a European colony or part of a colony?  What aspects of geography influenced your country’s national borders?  What historical ties or antagonisms do you deem important to the country’s development in the 20th century?  Were there any key events at the turn of the 20th century (~1890-1910) that influenced your country in the years following World War I?  Geographic issues include contested borders, unique natural resources, access to critical sea lanes, ground transportation systems etc.  Remember, where borders were drawn and by whom are very important factors to understanding the roots of complex issues across the Middle East.  Including one or more maps is highly encouraged and the space the maps take up on the page do not count toward your 6-8 pages of writing.
  •
    • Political Factors. What was your nation’s first form of government and did it change during the 20th century? Has its government been stable? Unstable? What factors have contributed to its level of stability?  During the 20th century, what were the major political or ruling parties? Who were the leaders of your country early in the 20th century (perhaps following WWI) and who were the leaders at the end (perhaps in 1989 or the end of the Cold War)? What nations are your country’s key allies?  What, if any, were the major impacts of the SECOND World War on the country?
  •
    • Social and Economic Factors. Assess the social structure of your nation. Are there historic frictions between ethnic or religious groups? What type of economy did your nation have post-World War I and how did it change or develop by the end of the 20th century?  What were the major economic resources or industries which influenced your country’s economic development? If your nation was previously a colony of another power, were there independence or nationalist movements?  If your nation had previously been the territory of another nation, were there lingering ethnic or political frictions?  What impact did post-World War II reconstruction of Europe have on the country economically, if any? Is it a member of any key economic multinational organization or alliance?
  •
    • Military Strength and Capabilities. Describe the development of your nation’s military capability in the 20th century.  Which branch (army, navy, air force) has been most important?  How big were they?  Key military leaders?  What was their level of modernization and did they depend on foreign assistance to modernize? Did they have a particular advantage or disadvantage? What significant actions did they participate in?  What was their status by the end of the Cold War?  Is it a member of any key alliance or treaty?
  •
    • Conclusions & Assessment of National Power. A country derives national power from its diplomatic, information, military, and economic capabilities.  Assess your country’s national power at the end of the Cold War.  Summarize key points you have already made and add any other important factors (e.g., alliances it joined to strengthen diplomatic power, its level of technological infrastructure, etc).  Assess and describe what you think is its most challenging issue at the end of the 20th century.  There are going to be many issues – pick ONE and make a short, powerful argument as to why you think it is most important to the future stability and growth or your selected nation.  The issue you choose could be internal political, ethnic, or religious strife, border disputes, economic development, modernization, etc.  Remember that military conflicts happen for a reason…get to the core issue in your assessment.  Limit your assessment at this point to the 20th century.  In your final paper, you will examine more recent events.

  • pages numbered in the upper right
  • 1-inch margins
  • use 12-point Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman
  • meet the required page length

Although an annotated bibliography and outline are not required assignments, you are strongly encouraged to draft these on your own to guide your research and writing.
