A large number of the paper three guidelines bounced back from e-mail addresses that some of you have received e-mails at before. I have attached the guidelines in the body of this e-mail just in case.

The goal of this assignment is to prepare you for the rigours of academic writing, which relates to the practical application of presenting information in a concise and well-formulated way. To place a finer point on it, the research essay forces you to present information from outside sources, as well as your own understanding of that information, in a narrative format.

Invisible Man is a dense and complicated novel. It’s multifaceted look at race and identity during the Post-WWI era incorporates ideas that can be explored through the writings of disciplines as varied as philosophy, psychology, sociology, postcolonial studies and art criticism. These larger disciplines and their research methods can be found as the basis of research for many of the numerous topics that have been identified in class up to this point.

All that said, what am I supposed to do?

The essay seems more complicated than it is. Your first step is to find a research topic, any of the ones that we have discussed in class, or one that you have come up with on your own, and find outside sources (i.e., books, scholarly articles, internet resources, films, database entries) that provide you with a more well-rounded look into Ellison’s milieu and/or career.

For example, let’s say I want to look into Ellison’s biography up until his time in Harlem. I would be able to see a lot of similarity between Ellison and his nameless narrator through an examination of outside material focused on biographical information from Ellison’s life, which can expand your understanding of Ellison’s novel. Or, if you’re more interested in what type of novel Ellison is writing, you may even want to look into the concept of the bildungsroman noticing how Ellison has placed himself within a literary tradition.

Once you have done so, your next step is to write a narrative that summarizes and quotes from all of the research that you have gathered.
