2. Outline of the 3 week
course:
a. What is the goal of the course?
Parents understand the effects,
process of baptism, and their responsibility for their child’s faith growth.
b. What are the outcomes for each week?
Week I:
Outcome 1: The Catechist (priest) to know the parent participants
Outcome 2: Participants get to know each other and or their children.
Outcome 3: Participants to recall their experience with any baptism before.
Week II:
Outcome
1: Participants will be able to answer what effects of baptism are
Outcome 2: Participants will write a letter to their child telling why they the
child baptized.
Week II:
Outcome 1: Participants will remember the steps and icons in baptism ceremony.
Outcome
2: Participants will prepare a letter to tell their child of her or his
baptism.
c. Describe the group:
Young adults from within the parish and other parishes attend the course for
certificate to sponsor a child for baptism. There are Hispanics but the main
language will be English because the participants are young and speak English
as a second language.
i. Who is this group in the parish?
Participants
are young people who may not be catechized much because their previous
catechism was sacraments prep-focused. They are busy with their work to support
their young families. They may be seasonal church-goers as well.
ii. How many are in the group?
There are about 20 to 30 participants in the course.
iii. Why are they here for this course?
To
have the certificate to sponsor a child for baptism.
iv. Social-economic level of parish:
Most of parishioners are working for a decent paying job. Yet the parish have a
small portion of people works in white collar field.
v. Ethnic, cultural features of the
group:
The parish composes of majority of Hispanics in later generations. People speak
mainly English.

Educational needs:
– Some Mexican icons are familiar with the people.
3. Create a detailed outline of the first or second week’s catechetical session

I/ Week I:
A. Goal of the session: getting to know each others and sharing baptism experiences.

– Outcome 1: The Catechist (priest) to know the parent participants
– Outcome 2: Participants get to know each other and or their children.
– Outcome 3: Participants to recall their experience with any baptism before.

Environment:
How will the space be set
up?
– Chairs will be set in a U shape which has open part as the board for
projection of video clips.
– Tables are set up against the walls. There should be water/ coffee and snacks for people to use.
– A table set in the middle for the icons of baptism: cross, candle, a large bowl of water, a set of Chrism oils, a small white garment.
Why set it up this way?
– So that people can mingle easily and can see each other.
Collaboration:
Who will catechize with
you? – One or two volunteers/ catechists.
What specifically will they do? – Greeting people, distributing handouts,
helping lead small group discussions.
Multiple Intelligences engaged:
List the art, music,
visual, costumes, etc. supplies to enhance the learning:
– Video clip will remind participants of their previous experience with
baptism.
– Picture of Jesus’ baptism to help participants imagine how wonderful is God’s grace to the baptized.
– Bible passage will help participants listen to God’s words.
– Baptism icons will
remind participants of their experience with Baptism before.
Which senses will be engaged:
– Hear, see, touch.
Which physical positions
will be involved?
– Participants stand for mingling, and beginning prayer.
– They will walk to the middle table and touch the icons.
– When sharing they will be seated.

Which adult principles
will you weave into the plan?
– The session will weave in the principle of
bringing the experiences that the participants have in their life to
bring to class, together with respect of their learning styles by setting up
different activities, and helping them to understand why it is important to
have this preparation course.
Prayer:
What
will the prayer space look like?
– Class room seems best fit this first session. However, with the middle table
filled with Baptism Icons, the room should be able to set up a spiritual mood
for everyone to pray.
What
will you do for the opening prayer? How does this relate to the topic of the
week?
– I will light the candle and have the lights dimed to read the Scripture
passage to the class. The pericope will be from Mark 1:9-11. Then I will ask
everyone to recall their baptism if they can or recall a baptism that they
participated before. This helps to set the tone for the recalling their
experience of baptism.
What
will you do for the closing prayer? How does this relate to the topic of the
week?
– Short prayer of Our Father as the class reflect on the how God loves the
baptized as He loves Jesus and call them His beloved.

II/ Week II:

Goal of the session: understanding the theology of Baptism.
B. Outcomes:

1: Participants will be able to answer what effects of baptism are
Outcome 2: Participants will write a letter to their child telling why they the
child baptized.

understand what the Baptism bring us, and encouraging them to live out their
faith as well as transfer their faith to their child.
Prayer:
What
will the prayer space look like?
– Class room seems best fit this first session. However, with the middle table
filled with Baptism Icons, the room should be able to set up a spiritual mood
for everyone to pray.
What
will you do for the opening prayer? How does this relate to the topic of the
week?
– I will light the candle and have the lights dimed to read the Scripture
passage to the class. The pericope will be from Matthew 3:13-17. Then I will
ask everyone to close their eyes as they listen to the song and imagine their
child’s baptism.
What
will you do for the closing prayer? How does this relate to the topic of the
week?
– After having written letters to their child/ god child, participants will be
asked to close their eyes and pray for the child who is going to be baptized,
asking God’s grace to be upon the child.
Session III/ Week III:
A. Goal of the session: rehearsing the ceremony of Baptism and meaning of icons in Baptism.
B. Outcomes:
Outcome 1: Participants will remember the steps and icons in baptism ceremony.
Outcome
2: Participants will prepare a letter to tell their child of her or his
baptism.

Why set it up this way?
– So that people can experience what will be going on at the actual baptism.

What specifically will they do? – Greeting people, distributing handouts,
helping direct people in formations.

– Participants gather in front of the sanctuary for beginning prayer.

– The session will weave in the principle of experiencing what they learn,
together with respect of their learning styles by setting up different
activities, and helping them to understand why it is important to have this
preparation course.
Prayer:
What
will the prayer space look like?
– In front of the sanctuary is good for prayer time.
What
will you do for the opening prayer? How does this relate to the topic of the
week?
– I will have participants to sit in front of the blessed sacrament and have a
personal time with God when they listen to the song “He have me you” again. The
pericope will be from Mark 1:9-11 again. Then I will ask everyone to recall
their baptism and thank God for his grace.
What
will you do for the closing prayer? How does this relate to the topic of the
week?
– Everyone holds each other’s hand while saying personal prayers asking God
grace to the children what are about to be baptism. Personal intention can be
added as well.
