Curriculum design is an integral part of the role an educator is expected to carryout. You will use Kern’s six-step approach to develop the curriculum. This assignment is worth 50% of your overall grade and has three parts. Submit your assignment as a single word file on Blackboard.
Deadline:
Word count: 2000 words (+ 10%), excluding references and appendices
Referencing format: Based on the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Sixth Edition
Academic integrity: Please note that the work submitted will be checked for plagiarism, collusion, and contract cheating. Failing to demonstrate integrity in the work submitted is viewed very seriously and would result in the work being graded zero. In some cases, the work will be reported for full investigation, unless the mitigating circumstances are provided.
Part 1: Problem Identification and Needs Assessment
For the curriculum you are planning, address the following questions:
- Identify a healthcare problem that will be addressed by the curriculum.
- Whom does the problem affect? What effects does this problem have on these people?
- How important is the problem, quantitatively and qualitatively?
- Based on your current knowledge, complete the table below by listing some of the things that patients, healthcare professionals, educators, and society at large are doing and should ideally be doing to address the problem.
Patients | Healthcare Professionals | Medical Educators | Society

5. What are the evidences available in literature?
6. Identify your targeted learners. What are their previous training experiences? What are their past and current performances? Do other curricula exist, or are planned currently? What information about your learners is unknown to you?
7. Describe a needs assessment plan to obtain the most important information. What are the resources (time, personnel, and spaces) you think you might require for your data collection and analysis?
Part 2: Aligning Goals, Objectives, and Competencies With Educational Methods
For the curriculum you are planning, address the following questions:
- Identify the main goals of the curriculum. List at least two goals.
- In the table provided below, complete the measurable objectives in each of the following domains: affective, cognitive, and psychomotor. List at least three objectives under each domain.
- Choose at least two learning objectives under each domain and think about the teaching and assessment methods that can be used to achieve this intended learning objective.
- Discuss these educational methods based on SPICES, whether they are learner-centred or promote self-directed learning.
- Discuss the feasibility of these educational methods and the resources required to implement them.
- Determine the competencies that are addressed through achieving these learning outcomes.
Measurable Objectives (SMART) | Teaching Method | Assessment Method | Measurable Objectives (SMART)
Cognitive (Knowledge)
Affective (Attitudinal)
Psychomotor (Skill or Performance) |
Part 3: Implementation Plan
For the curriculum you are planning, address the following questions:
- Think about the modality of your curriculum, whether it is face-to-face or online or blended, and list the resources you might require in terms of personnel, time, finance, space, etc.
- What is the degree of support within your institution for the curriculum? How can you increase the support? Do you require external support as well (e.g., funds, resource materials, and political support)?
- What kind of administrative support (structure, communication, operation, etc.) is required?
- Do you anticipate any barriers? How would you identify and mitigate them?
- How are you planning to introduce the curriculum? How are you going to pilot the curriculum and who are the targeted audience you are planning to pilot the curriculum toward?
- Thinking about the components of the educational environment, please discuss the measures to enhance your learners’ educational environment.
- Would you consider involving your learners in the curriculum design? Mention three facilitating factors.
- How will you ensure the quality of your curriculum? List the internal or external quality assurance bodies that are available.
