Nursing Leadership & Management
The purpose of the change project paper is to allow the student to understand the role of a change agent as applied to nursing leadership. Using the materials in Chapter 5 of the Sullivan textbook, the student will identify a needed change and use the change process to initiate the change. Imagine something that drives you crazy at work. What are your biggest challenges? What systems are not working? How could you fix these issues?
The project allows the student to explore a leadership problem or need and determine how to resolve the problem professionally.
Guidelines and Grading Criteria | Points |
Title Describe the organizational structure and nursing delivery system of the facility. What is the impact of the structure and delivery system on the problem or need? How will the project improve patient care? Address stakeholders, barriers, facilitators, risks, unintended consequences, and your SWOT analysis | (10 points) |
Lewin’s Change Theory Provide a general introduction to the theory and then address the theory in more detail. Include the following: Unfreezing–Lewin’s Unfreezing Stage. Describe (and cite!) this stage and how it relates to the project. Lewin’s Moving Stage Describe (and cite!) this stage and how it relates to the project. Lewin’s Refreezing Stage Describe (and cite!) this stage and how it relates to the project. | (20 points) |
Synthesis of the Literature Synthesize at least 8 research studies and/or systematic reviews, not summary articles. This is all about the evidence rather than someone else’s opinion of the evidence. Do not use secondary sources; you need to get the article, read it, and make your own decision about quality and applicability to your problem. The studies need to relate to your problem; address similarities, differences, and controversies. | (15 points) |
Practice Recommendations Using all available evidence, what information can you glean that will guide you toward finding a solution to your problem? Summarize the strength of the body of evidence (quality, quantity, and consistency), make a summary statement, and give a recommendation for practice change. In other words, what does the literature say is a good solution to your problem? | (10 points) |
Project Objectives and Goal Include objectives for your project. Provide a statement of a terminal goal which includes a measurable outcome. | (10 points) |
Project Plan Strategies-Description of strategies to achieve goals. The literature must support each strategy. Include research data to support strategies and develop best practices. Operational Indicators-Is there indications (operational indicator) whether the strategies were effective or not? In other words, how will you know if your plan is working or not? What will you assess? Does the project signal success or failure of the proposed plan? Budget-Prepare and justify a budgetary plan for your project, including capital, personnel, and operational expenditures. | (15 points) |
Implementation Considerations What considerations should be taken in implementing this change project? Recap the project without adding any new information and provide a closing. | |
Evaluation Design an evaluation plan for the facility to use to evaluate the achievement of the goals. Provide strategies or tools for evaluation and the time frames to be utilized by the agency to evaluate goal achievement. (10 points) | (10 points) |
References Create a title page using7th ed. APA format. (Refer to Sample Title Page under Start Here as an example). The title of the paper should be related to the topic of your specific paper. Do not use the title of an article as the title of the paper. Utilize the syllabus grading criteria as level one headings. The body of the paper must be no more than five to seven pages in length. Follow APA guidelines for manuscript preparation. Do not use a bulleted or numbered list. There must be a minimum of one direct quote and two paraphrases in the body of the paper. One paraphrase must cite multiple works in the same parenthesis (APA p. 263). There must be a concluding paragraph rather than just an ending, but do not include Conclusion as a level one heading. o Review the APA manual pages 316-317 to formulate the proper citation for your articles based on whether a digital object identifier (doi) is available or not. Dr. Paper and other software for APA formatting are not recommended. Do not use the APA feature in Word as it does not allow faculty to insert comments and tracked changes. Use the Cite feature of the database, but remember to make necessary APA correction. o The reference list must include at least eight peer-reviewed journal references (nursing journals if possible) not more than five years old. o The reference list must include the major textbook in this course. o Wikipedia and similar sites are not acceptable. | (10 points) |
