Think of this in terms of steps you will be taking.  Each step should parallel each other to give a fuller understanding of how they compare.  For example:

  • Entry-level (just starting out)
    • What education do you need for this level?
    • Location/Cost of education?
    • What will the salary starting out look like?
    • What tasks and responsibilities will you have?
    • Strategies for success/advancement?
  • Mid-level (5-10 years)

    • Location/Cost of education?
    • What will the salary starting out look like?
    • What tasks and responsibilities will you have?
    • Strategies for success/advancement?
  • Upper-level (your ultimate goal OR the highest levels attainable in the career even if it’s not what you want to do)
    • What education do you need for this level?
    • Location/Cost of education?
    • What will the salary starting out look like?
    • What tasks and responsibilities will you have?
    • Strategies for success/advancement?

  • Where would you obtain this education? (On-the-job training, junior college, technical school, college, or university?)
  • What are the entrance requirements for these training schools? How many years? Post graduate?
  • What is the standard beginning wage for this job? In this area? Elsewhere?
  • What is the maximum salary you can expect? Here? Elsewhere?

You do not need to choose every item on the list; only choose what you identify with most and what you can support with research.

Section IV

Interview

(Only 1 source required)

Conduct an interview with a person who works in your field of interest or find a published or recorded interview with someone in your career field if you cannot find anyone to interview personally. If you use this option, be sure to cite the source in APA format, and the source must be no more than 7 years old to comply with APA guidelines.

  • Describe a typical day for a person in this job.
  • What are the usual hours?
  • What are the best parts of the day?
  • What would be the most challenging?
  • What else do you think I should know that maybe I did not ask? (to ask interviewee)
  • What advice can you give someone, who wishes to go into this field? (to ask interviewee)

Section V:  Reflection

(No source required)

Finally, you will need to conclude your paper by reflecting on your research and your experience.

Suggested questions:

  • How has this research confirmed or changed your plans and why?
  • Which aspects of the field/position do you like/dislike and why?
  • What next?  If you will continue to pursue this career, what is your next step? Internship, trade program, apprenticeship, four year degree?  If you decided this is not the career for you, how are you going to decide what to pursue next?

Conclusion:

Restate thesis in new words, sum up your main ideas, and rehook your audience
