Assignment Information:
Find the website of a state that interests you. The web address may be of the form www.statename.gov or similar. For example, the website for the state of Ohio can be found at www.Ohio.gov.
Once on the site’s home page, search for links to the state’s annual budget information. You may have to do a little bit of website digging to find exactly what you’re looking for. You may also want to look at supplemental reports that accompany the state’s budget to help you understand and analyze the allocation of their funds.
Review the Budget
- What are the budgeted sources of revenue? How is the state earning money? Provide a percentage breakdown of the different types of revenue.
- What are the major categories of budgeted expenditures (or appropriations). Where is the state spending money? Provide a percentage breakdown of the different types of expenditures.
- Analyze the budget information and provide feedback regarding the state’s budget and discuss your understanding of how money is allocated. Do you agree or disagree with the allocation of funds, why or why not?
