Next thursday we will be using the “Inequality in Brazil” case (linked in the syllabus on session 12) to discuss some of the issues surrounding causes, consequences and remedies for inequality. This case discussion, in which I will cold-call, is a great opportunity to participate in class. Here are some of the questions that we will discuss:
What type of inequalities are discussed in the case?
What are the barriers to equality in Brazil the case discusses?
Are they similar to the barriers you find in countries you know?
What was done in Brazil to alleviate inequality?
Were there tradeoffs between inequality alleviation and other desirable goals (think of the SDG list)?
How do these programs tackle inequality in the long run? Can the SDG framework help?
What can we expect from the future trajectory of Brazil with respect to inequality given a possible return of Lula to power?
