English Studies 12 is designed around a set of big ideas put forward by the BC Ministry of Education. These are meant to guide our thinking as we explore the concepts that are presented to us across the course. Below, you will find a list of these big ideas. Consider the things you’ve discovered in this course so far such as the texts you’ve read, images you’ve seen, and the ideas you’ve developed. What was the most important thing you think you learned? Also, consider your life experiences. How might they impact your understanding of these big ideas? In other words, what does it mean to you? Why does it matter? Provide examples from the readings and assignments to back your points.

  • The exploration of text and story deepens our understanding of diverse, complex ideas about identity, others, and the world.
  • People understand text differently depending on their worldviews and perspectives.
  • Texts are socially, culturally, geographically, and historically constructed.
  • Language shapes ideas and influences others.
  • Questioning what we hear, read, and view contributes to our ability to be educated and engaged citizens.
  • The examination of Indigenous Peoples cultures and lived experiences through text builds understanding of Canadians’ responsibilities in relation to Reconciliation.

Proficiency Scale Information:

  • To show Developing Understanding – write 200-300 words.  Information can be mostly personal opinions but remain on topic.
  • To show Proficient Understanding – write at 300-500 words.  Information is on topic and begins to bring in experience with the course as well as personal opinions.
  • To show Extended Understanding – write 500-1000 words, in multi-paragraph form and demonstrates the traits from the exemplary section of the assessment rubric below.
