Utilizing a personal narrative or experience as your primary support, write an 800 to 1100 word “Definition Essay”. The goal of this essay is to define a word or idea for the audience in a way that is more than its strict technical definition. Consider a word that is misused, misinterpreted, or often confused with another term, in your opinion. Define your unique interpretation of the word’s meaning, and defend it through the use of your own experience.
An example of this topic might go as follows:
- I learned what it means to be American by watching my Daddy stand up to the redcoats in the revolutionary war.
- To be a true fan is more than I bargained for, a fact I learned over a weekend at Anime Boston.
This is not a research essay, and the primary defense of your definition should derive from the narrative/experience that you include. The narrative may lead to your personal revelation of the term’s meaning, or it may just be used to illustrate the term’s meaning to the audience.
As there is no research expected, no citations or works cited is required–but if you do use outside sources you must cite them. Failure to do so can be considered plagiarism.
