- We see that both external and internal forces can police White Collar Crimes. Read this article about the Kim Watson case “New Jersey woman steals $3.7 million in goods from Sears warehouse” by Joel Landau, New York Daily News (Oct 20, 2014). Watson was arrested. Research and see if you can find out what happened to the case.
Respond to the following scenario. You are the full-time director of a non-profit organization that funds children pre-school programs. As fundraising is part of your duties, you have been very successful at that endeavor and your organization has about 1.5 million in a variety of endowed accounts. You operate the programs from the interest on these accounts. You have one other full-time employee, Alice, who takes care of the financial records and secretarial /bookkeeping duties. Both you and Alice’s names are on the banking accounts. You have 10 part-time employees who manage the children’s programs. Yesterday, you get a call from the bank where your accounts are located. The bank manager asks you to stop by her office as the bank audit on your accounts has some suspicious activity. The bank manager tells you that Alice has been moving some of the account funds back and forth within the last 2 weeks.
You are concerned but have always trusted Alice to handle the bookkeeping. You have been a little lax in holding weekly meeting with her the past year due to your personal family issues. You ask to check see the records and discover that your last 3 donors, who contributed a total of $20,000 aren’t listed in the bank records as having contributed.
Based on what you know above and the information from your textbook, videos and other sources, write a post and respond to the following questions.
1. Realizing there may be a logical explanation, discuss whether you will ‘self police’, contact local law enforcement or another agency.
2. You know from your training that there are certain clues that are often present if someone is embezzling funds. Describe how you will investigate Alice without tipping Alice off.
3. Describe what you will do with the bank and the current finances and investments.
4. Describe what you will do to follow-up on the 3 large donations totaling $20,000 and currently not accounted for.
5. If your investigation does show Alice was criminally involved, describe 2 possible reasons why she would do this?
6. Back to Kim Watson’s case. Were you able to find out if she was convicted and sentenced? Do you think this case was handled internally or externally? Explain.

Respond to the following questions:
1. Who did you research and what did they do to receive house arrest?
2. In your opinion, do you believe house arrest is a fitting punishment for their crimes. Why or why not?
3. If you had been the judge, what punishments, if any, would you have imposed differently?
4. Discuss 2 reasons why house arrest might be a more viable option than prison for white-collar criminals?
