The American Navy is often used as a diplomatic tool to promote American values abroad.
Our sailors have been called upon to help foreign governments and needy populations to recover from disasters, wars and drought. Theodore Roosevelt used our American naval might as a ‘big stick’ to help convince the rulers of other nations that America was a ‘world power’ and to convince the people of those nations that Americans will use our might to spread peace and prosperity.
Six years later, on the eve of World War I, Europe nations were competing to construct large, dangerous, sailing, gun platforms (battleships) and stealthy, underwater missile platforms (submarines).
To counteract the threat of those submarines, the British Navy created a stealthy craft of their own – the Q-ship.
