Assaults on paramedics, hospital staff and health care workers have become so common recently that many incidents are often going unreported and urgent patient care is being compromised or delayed due to safety concerns. Ambulance Victoria reported recently that on average a paramedic is assaulted every 50 hours. Last year, 147 paramedics were assaulted. The number of nurses assaulted in Victorian health settings has increased by a shocking 60 per cent in the last three years. You have been asked by the Victorian Minister for Health, Jenny Mikakos, to provide a detailed report about the prevalence and types of abuse experienced by health care professionals. Your report should consider both social and environmental crime prevention solutions to reduce occupational violence and aggression against healthcare workers to better protect them from harm, as well as a plan for implementation and evaluation.
