Urban Government Agencies (FBI and NSA)
The Federal Bureau of Investigation commonly referred to as the FBI is a security agency in the United States of America government that serves as security and intelligence agency. The agency operates within the jurisdiction of U.S. solving most of the security issues including counterintelligence and counterterrorism. Most of the federal crimes reported in the U.S. are tackled by this agency. The primary purpose of this agency is to provide domestic services hence cannot operate outside the US jurisdiction (FBI, 2017). Some of the services and missions of FBI are discussed herein. The agency protects the civil rights of US citizens. It plays the role of investigating abuse of any human rights and tackling such cases reported. It protects the United States against any cyber terrorism attacks. The agency has one of the most comprehensive laboratories in the world. Most of the researches are conducted in these labs ranging from the forensic experiment to the cyber terrorism attacks investigation (FBI, 2017). Therefore, it plays a significant role not only in safeguarding the U.S. from physical attacks, but also from the cyber-based attacks.
The FBI protects the country from the terrorist attacks. It investigates any suspects, and in the case of terrorism attacks, the Critical Intelligence Response Group (CIRG) intervenes the situation (FBI, 2017). FBI is renowned for combatting violent crime and protecting the civil rights of the US citizens. In the case of violent attacks, the FBI are sent to combat with the criminals and restore the safety of the affected area. The FBI training academy trains all the FBI hence serves as a tremendous resource of instilling expertise to the security personals. The Strategic Information and Operations is a center of FBI that is responsible for disseminating the necessary information and ensuring good communication and command within the country. Therefore, FBI is an important agency within the U.S. government for overall security.
The National Security Agency (NSA) is a security agency in the U.S. government. It serves the purpose of gathering information and global monitoring hence it serves as a counterintelligence agency and protection against the country’s information and communication systems (NSA, 2016). Some of the reputable roles played by this agency are spying of the economic espionage. Similarly, the agency gave information in concern of the anti-Vietnam war leaders hence helping in the war. The agency tracks the movement of many cell phones users hence it is vital in giving the military and the FBI information in regards to any insecurity issue. In a case of hostages, the agency has been known to play a huge role in providing information that leads to the rescue of the hostages and arrest of the criminals. The overall function of the agency is to provide information that safeguards the citizens of US.
FBI and NSA differ in that the FBI provides trained personnel to intervene the security issues physically. The FBI is allowed to operate within the USA jurisdiction while NSA can retrieve information globally. As such, NSA aims at only helping the militant groups by providing the necessary information (NSA, 2016). It protects the country by keeping track of any insecurity issue possible to arise and informing the relevant authorities. On the contrary, FBI protects the States through seeking information and sending the trained agents to prevent the insecurity issues. The FBI carries most of the tasks carried by the NSA through the Strategic Information and Operations Center. NSA does not possess a training school, unlike the FBI. For economic gains, the function of both agencies could be shared. As such, Strategic Information and Operations Center does most of the tasks done by NSA thus, it would ultimately share the responsibilities of NSA. Similarly, the NSA workers would undergo training in the FBI training school to save on the cost.
