Initial Response
The multi-movement cycle was one of the most important developments in Classical music based on the
elements of melody, harmony, tempo, meter, and forms.
Address each of the following bulleted prompts:
• Identify the forms most commonly utilized in each movement of the traditional, 4-movement
cycle.
• Explain how the elements of melody, harmony, tempo, and meter help to define each
movement. (Address each movement independently.)
• Choose one of the following numbered points (1 or 2) and explain how ALL OF THE
MOVEMENTS LISTED relate to and/or vary from the basic principles of the multi-movement
cycle.
• Use the textbook, lectures, and listening guides for information on this comparison/contrast with
the typical characteristics associated with each movement of the multi-movement cycle.
• Cite specific sections of the composer’s music to support your observations.
- Mozart’s Eine kleine Nachtmusick (movements I and III), AND Haydn’s Symphony No. 94 in G
Major (“Surprise”) (movement II), AND Haydn’s String Quartet in E-flat Major, Op. 33, No. 2
(“Joke”) (movement IV). - Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C Minor (all 4 movements).

• In reading the posts of your fellow class members, offer additional comments that expand upon,
offer a clearer understanding of, or provide additional details about A WORK THAT YOU DID NOT
SELECT. In the event that all members of your discussion group chose the same piece(s), offer
additional comments that compare/contrast the piece(s) with those which the remaining bullet
point concerns.
• Discussion interactions in which students converse with others that do not necessarily maintain
similar views are highly encouraged. Often, through conversing on the discussion boards,
participants will find that their own understanding and appreciation for course material are
challenged and, ultimately, strengthened by having to defend a position. Be brave! Step outside
of your comfort zone and interact with your classmates!
NOTE
• Initial discussion postings must contain 200 words at minimum.
• No points will be given for unit discussions that do not fulfill the minimum requirements for the
assignment which include submission by the specified deadlines, an initial response and
discussion reply.
• You are required to respond to at least one posting of another classmate per unit. Reply posts
must contain 100 words at minimum. This is the minimum requirement for a “Satisfactory”
grade value (see “Rubric for Unit Discussions”). Additional responses are encouraged in the spirit
of creating an online classroom community.
• Grades will be based upon overall quality of writing and the criteria set forth in the Assessment
Rubric for Unit Discussions (syllabus).
