Assignments #1: Top-Line Messaging
Write TWO, separate and distinct memos:
In these memos make your top strategic political (“macro”) recommendations for the best message(s) each the political party should espouse to connect with the 18-25-year-old audience.
Be specific and tell me why. (In other words, how should the Party be talking to your age group to win support).
Write one memo to the Republican party, and a one memo to the Democrat party. Keep these memos to about a page each.
(Please submit these as one file, have your name in the file name, and submit as a Worddoc if possible)
These should be treated as separate memorandums and keep each memo to one page.
Remember: Context matters and so too does reality.
Hint: “Every action has an equal or greater reaction.”
- Think in headlines
- Make clear the benefit and takeaway
- Use both sides of your brain
- Analytical and creativity
- Preserve clarity at all costs
- Stay away from unsupported statements, “Most people think”
- Write hot and edit cold
- Read what you write
- Writing and editing are not the same, so split these up
- Avoid Passive Language
- Proof your work
Democrats message points:
- Unity (Clinton and Bernie Sanders policies united front no division within the party) getting the Obama, Hilary, ad Bernie Sanders supporters together
- Appeal to the young voters / non-whites
- Steer away from liberal elitism and focus on grassroots candidates
- Lower taxes (not higher taxes) / same size government (not bigger government)
- Reliable healthcare (fix the failures of Obamacare)
- Reverse the Iran deal
- Young Representation/ accurate demographic representation (i.e. gender disparity)
- Non-corrupt no influence from big companies on candidate’s platform
- Close the wage gap
- Abolish immigration and customs enforcement agency ICE
- More decency, more respect, and more humanity
Republican message point:
- “Part of ideas” restore traditional conservative ideology
- Replacing Paul Ryan who intellectually counterbalanced Trump take over
- Focus on extracting government out of poverty, healthcare and taxation (tax cuts)
- Reganism (tax reform)
- Immigration system reform (border safety)
- Halting the influx of low skilled labor and encouraging high skilled labor
