In “Bloodchild,” I could identify that all species are dependent on one another. The story’s underlying theme of interdependence resonated with me the most. Butler’s protagonists are thrust into a societal structure that inhibits their options, forcing them to depend on one another and tolerate the demands of others. The Tlic are formidable warriors, but they have no means of sustaining themselves on their own. The survival of the species is dependent on the collaboration of the Terran inhabitants. Terrans also rely on the Tlic for survival. The Terrans have landed on an unknown planet. They are utterly reliant on the Tlic for their basic needs, such as food and shelter. Because Terrans remain physically weaker than the Tlic, every human family acts as a host for their parasite progeny. The Tlic will defend Terrans in return for the capacity to give birth to their children securely and reliably. The Terrans’ freedom in the aliens’ world is something they strive for, but it is only symbolic.

Consequently, in her narrative, Butler describes Terrans as “necessities, status symbols, and an autonomous people.” Terrans, exceptionally mature and knowledgeable beings like Gan’s mother, recognize that such independence has little resemblance to true freedom. Individuals can survive on the Preserve if they are willing to live within the interdependent system, surrendering to the bigger requirements of society as well as enjoying its gifts. Gan’s relatives from the story are an excellent example of this. In their passion for T’Gatoi and their acceptance of their predicament in the Preserve, Gan and Xuan Hoa go hand in hand (Butler, pp. 235). In conclusion, “Bloodchild” illustrates an interconnected society, whether or not it is truly equal. The story’s changing power dynamics aid character development and highlight the fascinating differences between this civilization and society.
