The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill
The Objectives
This assignment is designed to help you use several of the School of Business’ learning goals: critical thinking, communication, leadership, and multicultural awareness. In addition, you’ll be using several other skills: scenario development, analysis, decision-making, application of theory, interpersonal, time management, and creativity.
The Deliverable
Write a 20 page standard business report (with executive summary, introduction, conclusion, headings, etc.) analyzing The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill, its environmental context, and leadership issues as presented in the case The Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill: The Politics of Crisis Response (A & B). The report should address the following:
- Environmental Analysis – via an analysis of the national landscape preceding the Deepwater spill, strengths and weaknesses, and external opportunities and threats (SWOT) in terms of preparedness to address a major oil spill event.
- 4-Frame Analysis of the Organizational Response to Deepwater – an examination of what the involved governments faced – via the structural, human resource, political, and symbolic frames.
- 4-Frame Leadership Analysis – a 4-frame perspective of the managerial and leadership characteristics, needs, and the skills required to meet the Deepwater challenge, drawing on specific examples of persons involved. Pay attention to the kind of leadership the situation needed, according to each frame.
- Recommendations for the Future – pay attention to the leaders’ capacities and the change issues required to meet the Deepwater challenges as you understand them. What frame(s) inform how you [1] understand the challenges and [2] recommend that the involved parties meet them?
- Recommendation Critique – brief discussion of the anticipated outcomes of your recommendations and shortcomings in them that you see
