Reasons for Choosing Health Informatics Master’s Program

I have always dreaded receiving poor services from hospitals and other health care facilities. Essentially, this is because all activities carried out in such institutions involve human life, which is extremely important and delicate. In my early childhood, my aunt died because of medical malpractice: she received blood of a different type. Although we sued for negligence that led to the fatality and collateral damages, it never eased our pain. This incident together with other medical errors resulting in massive deaths annually, which outnumber terrorist attacks, road carnages, plane crashes, homicides, and suicides combined, propelled me to indulge in the domain of health informatics. People do not deserve to die of avoidable medical errors such as mixed test results, wrong medication, and poor general health care. Therefore, I have decided to become that person who could help improve health care services and facilities through boosting quality, efficiency, and creating wider opportunities for medical research. I also want to help implement solutions related to information technology for organizations in the health sector and promote safe, responsible, and effective health care management and service delivery all over the world to ensure positive health outcomes from seeking medical aid and attention. As such, in this essay, I would like to discuss the reasons why I chose a Health Informatics Master’s Program, particularly at Boston University, after completing a Database Administration Bachelor’s Program in Management of Information Technology.

To achieve my stated desire and dream, information technology has been a relevant and mandatory field to engage in. I have developed a strong liking for high technology and practically everything related to computers and information technology operations. While having my Bachelor’s degree, the idea of using my interest and immense skills in database management and information security to help improve the crucial health sector stemmed from my knowledge of various  database management (programming) tools like PHP, MySQL, and SQL Server, which can translate into health informatics in the aspect of storing and processing Medical Health Records. I believe that quality and dependable care starts from how patient records are managed. In most cases, manual record keeping makes it hard not only to track records, but also to ensure that such records can be easily retrieved years after patients received medical attention. With a good database management system, hospitals have a chance to share patient information with their consent, even when the hospitals are miles away. Therefore, I hope to develop and use my skills in web design, like HTML, CSS, and Java after my studies in your institution, if given a chance, to help develop online applications and create software relational database designs, to further the Medical Informatics industry. My dream is to use the IT skills I have acquired and continue to practise over the years to work for the best health IT company in America, “Cerner Corporation”, to help redefine the structure and accuracy of the Electronic Health Records Analytical Software being produced and sold to hospitals today.

In addition, I am eager to gain the competence required in managing, processing, and analyzing data related to medicine and healthcare services. Through this master’s program, I will obtain enough expertise and prowess to deal with different issues arising in the healthcare sector. Some of these issues include conducting biomedical research, heading initiatives towards the improvement of healthcare information technology, and designing, implementing, and managing up-to-date database solutions. Furthermore, this particular field offers an expansive opportunity for refinement and transformation mostly of areas related to information channels and systems in hospitals and other healthcare facilities, which tend to be poorly organized. The fact that most healthcare institutions only focus on molding health practitioners and not those who help manage healthcare systems is a major challenge today. Thus, with my interest in the medical field, I believe that I will help provide professional assistance to such institutions, which help save the lives of many people across the world.

Besides, this further study with a focus on healthcare informatics also mirrors my passion for conducting research in this sphere since it involves cutting-edge methods and experiential learning fostered through a curriculum that is interdisciplinary, liberal, and permissive. As such, I particularly chose to pursue the master’s program at Boston University, as it is an institution of higher learning promoting research activities, particularly in information technology. Moreover, I believe that this institution will help develop my business, hardware, and software skills, which are needed in today’s economy, to bridge the gap between backend IT developers and frontend CRM workers. With more IT practical projects that can challenge me to improve and use my skills, I believe that I will come out of Boston University as a better and skilled professional not only in the Health Informatics sector, but also in other database management and security related industries. Indeed, I strongly believe that Boston University offers the best environment for me to undertake the Health Informatics Master’s Program.

In the future, I would like to establish research centers in database management and information security, set up anonymous hotlines in hospitals nationwide, and improve the general information technology in healthcare facilities all over the state. The primary idea is to aid the provision of better and improved services in hospitals and other health institutions. In turn, this would help all those affected by medical malpractices to return their faith in our doctors, physicians, clinical officers, and the entire medical fraternity in terms of proper data management. In addition, it would also help to prevent unnecessary deaths caused by medical errors. As the saying goes, prevention is better than cure.
