The films “Book of Negroes” and “A House Divided” both focus on slave women. The first is fiction; the second is true, or partially true. One was born in West Africa; the other was born in Georgia. One knew obviously that she was a slave; the other did not know that she was black–let alone a slave–until she was grown. Select one of the movies and discuss it. Make sure that your discussion includes the important roles of supporting characters, such as the first slave owner in “Book,” the man who raped the main protagonist, or the changing dynamics of mother-daughter relations in “House,” which–sadly–was also predicated on sexual violation.
