Select any research topic that relates to Race and/or Ethnicity for your Final Paper Writing Assignment. This final assignment must be completed by the end of Module 8.
The topic can be based upon any Race/Ethnicity topic we have or have not covered in this course. However, the paper CANNOT be a resubmission of an earlier assignment. In other words:
you can select an original topic based upon ideas presented in the modules, assignments, or textbook and expand further upon that topic;
or, you can select an original topic based on current or past events that might not have been presented or discussed in this course.
Select a topic that will be specific and interesting enough for you to elaborate upon. The choice is up to you! Feel free to ask your instructor for guidance if you have any questions on a chosen topic
If you need some topic ideas for your final paper, there are several broad areas to consider as options below. These are just some suggestions; your final topic selection is ultimately up to you.
Final Race/Ethnicity Topic Ideas (if you don’t already have one):
Experiences of Refugees and Resettlement
Environmental Justice
Social Movements
Issues of Inequality (income, education, etc.)
Health/Healthcare Disparities
Contributions of Immigrants and Immigration
Women as an Oppressed Majority
Racial Profiling
Gender Issues and Race
Race/Ethnicity and the Criminal Justice System
Any specific Ethnic Group or Cultural Group you would like to explore sociologically
Current Events relating to Race/Ethnicity
Differences in Language, Social Class, Nationality and Religion in the Arab and Muslim communities throughout the world.
Once you have selected your final topic, you are required to develop and write a short, objective research-based paper as described below. As this is a research-based paper, the use of editorial or opinion pieces, in any form, is prohibited. Follow the guidelines below when preparing your work.
Guidelines:
Your source material must be from at least two (2) scholarly articles and two (2) secondary sources. Also, consider specific books or excerpts from a book on the topic. The textbook can be an additional source as well. More sources are always welcome.
Include and appropriately incorporate some form of multi-media such as: a website, a video link, excerpt from a film, and/or other cultural media sources (two minimum). These are in addition to your scholarly source requirements as seen above.
Your work must be original, written at the college-level, and appropriately cited using APA/ASA, MLA, or Chicago style guidelines.
Your bibliography should be submitted with the paper and will NOT count as part of your word count.
Your final paper must be submitted by the due date listed in Module 8.
Remember, the goal is for you to articulate a topic related to Race and/or Ethnicity and research it in an objective manner. It is not a place to voice subjective opinion.
As always, provide citations and references to support your ideas and to give proper credit to the authors/sources. The citations and links to each selection should be provided. As with all writing assignments, refer to the Writing Assignment Rubric in the Syllabus Module for how the assignment will be assessed by your instructor. All written assignments will be checked for plagiarism and originality via the Turn-It-In application.
