Instructional Goal (outcome that students should be able to demonstrate upon completion of the learning experience, should be related to state standards or Indiana Foundations): Students will select and engage in a kinesthetic writing activity from a selected list of writing choices. |
Performance Objective (use an action verb in a description of a measurable outcome): Students will write letters with chalk or paint.Students will write words with chalk or paint.Students will measure their words using their body. |
Materials & Aids (what you will need in order to teach this activity): Sidewalk space.Sidewalk chalk.Water-soluble, non-toxic paint.Large paint brushes.Digital camera.Printer.Book binder. |
Procedures: Focusing event (how you will begin the lesson and attract the children’s attention):Students will be shown photos of signs that have been written on the ground, with size comparisons to people. (Photos of the teacher next to signs in parking lots etc. and photos of the teacher lying down next to the campus sidewalk advertisements, or next to wall graffiti.)Students will be asked if they’d like to try to do something like writing their name or a word on the sidewalk. Student Participation (how you will get the students to participate and stay on task):Students will be given ample materials and time to complete their work. When they are done writing they will be given the option to have their picture taken with their work. When this is done, and they no longer wish to write, they will be allowed to make another choice. If a student has not spent much time investigating materials, they will be asked about why they aren’t writing. If they have a problem with the materials, amendments will be made and if they just don’t want to write, they can make another choice. Teaching procedures (step-by-step directions for what and how you will teach): Students will be brought in pairs to the sidewalk. They will be asked if they can write words or their names as big as their bodies. They will be given the option of washable paint or sidewalk chalk. They will be given ample to time and space to achieve this and to decorate it. Closure (how you will end the learning activity):When the student announces their completion of the project, they will be encouraged to have their picture taken with their work.Students will view their picture and return to class.Once all photos have been taken, they will be, together with the original photos shown earlier, assembled into a book. |
Assessment Formative check (progress checks throughout the learning activity):Teacher will help the student as they struggle to create the right shape of the letters and help them with spelling. Summative assessment (how you will measure outcomes to determine if the material has been learned):Teacher will document those letters that each student is capable of writing. |
Adaptations for special needs (based on IFSP or IEP): Child with ADD: none needed. |
Lesson Extensions For More Practice: Large paper will be provided in the classroomStudents will be encouraged to show and tell their parents about what they wrote at departure time. For More Challenge: Students will be asked whether they can write their names in the sand box.Students will be given the opportunity to write their names even bigger than they did during this activity the next day.Students will be asked, “What else could we use to make our names?”SStudents will be asked “How small can you write your name?” |
