Question: What role do emotions play in the way that Russian citizens view and interact with their current political system?
Some scholars argue that Russian citizens participate in politics and evaluate their political leaders based mainly on rational self-interest and-or on values. Others argue that emotions play a significant role. For example, Robertson and Greene (2017, 96) argue that Russia’s annexation of Crimea bound “Putin’s existing supporters more tightly to the regime by leading them to become more enthusiastic and emotionally engaged.” Discuss other examples where emotions seem to play a significant role in Russian citizens’ political views and-or behavior. Explain why and consider whether these examples are rooted more in specific conditions or in enduring features of Russian citizens’ culture or their political system.
