Introduction
The purpose of this essay is to reflect upon my clinical experience during my third clinical placement in physiotherapy department. I have decided to reflect some of my professional and practice skills development, during the case of stroke patient I treated under my educator supervision. I will be using the Gibbs reflective cycle, to help structure my reflective writing paper. The Gibbs (1998) model of reflection allows me to think retrospectively and to evaluate and analyze each phase of the experience. The last phase allows me to plan a course of action and how effectively I will handle and improve the situation next time.
Description
It was Sunday; I was assigned in stroke unit of Al Ain hospital. It was my first exposure to stroke unit and stroke patient, and I was nervous that how would the patient response to me especially because I am a student and how would I take history from the patient. In stroke unit there were few patients, I assigned with a stroke patient named Abdulla. My clinical educator was teaching me about the side effects that patient suffers from a stroke that results in severe weakness on one side. It was difficult for me to take his history because of the language barrier and the communication problems after stroke. After assessing and taking the patient history, we took the patient to the rehabilitation room for treatment. I put the patient on the Moto med bicycle for 20 minutes. My clinical educator asked me to put the patient on the standing frame with the help of my college for 10 rep and 3 sets. The patient refused to complete all the sets because he was tired, but I was encouraging him to continue to improve and retain his strength. Suddenly, we realized that the patient starts sweating excessively like he was drowned in a deep water. I was disappointed and shocked without any action comes out from me because it was the first time such as this accident had happened to me. My clinical educator was quick-witted by putting the patient on the chair with raising his legs and checking the vital signs. The patient blood pressure was low. My educator asked me to bring some water for the patient and recheck his vital signs and everything was on the normal range.
