Online landscape: Objectionable material vs. Online Dating
Objectionable material includes material that describes, depicts, expresses, or otherwise deals with matters such as horror, crime, cruelty, and violence. The internet is full of these types of material. I am, therefore, of the opinion that the federal government should do more to protect children against objectionable material on the web. This is because children are often impressionable at such an age. The said material could have severe negative impacts on their lives as well as the communities they will make. The federal government should consider conducting a national media campaign to educate parents about these issues, the use of a uniform rating system across all platforms on the internet, and put up strict laws that cut off access to the material for children as well as punishing those who give children access to the same. If implemented, these recommendations should help protect the children.
Online dating has evolved from the tradition of seeking assistance from others to find a romantic relationship. According to a research done between June 10 and July 12, 15% of Adults in the U.S. have used an online dating site. The use of these sites among young adults (18-24 years old) has risen three times over since 2013. This rise is because of the dramatic increase in dating apps and their use. People who have used the service argue that online dating is a good way to meet people; it allows people to find a good match due to the many people who subscribe to them. A smaller percentage of the people sampled say that online dating has negative consequences. They mention that are online dating is more dangerous than other means of meeting people, it makes people less inclined to settle down, and that individuals who use online dating are desperate. However, it is statistically shown from the research that more people are pro-online dating.
