As part of the formal assessment for the programme you are required to submit a Principles of Marketing assignment. Please refer to your Student Handbook for full details of the programme assessment scheme and general information on preparing and submitting assignments.

  1. Explain the marketing process, with particular reference marketing audits, orientation, environmental analysis, marketing planning
  • Distinguish the contribution of the elements of the extended marketing mix to effective marketing planning
  • Use the concepts of segmentation, targeting and positioning to respond to marketing problems
  • Apply the marketing mix in selected situations
  • Show situational awareness in applying the extended marketing mix.

Your assignment should include: a title page containing your student number, the module name, the submission deadline and a word count; the appendices if relevant; and a reference list in Harvard format. You should address all the elements of the assignment task listed below. Please note that tutors will use the assessment criteria set out below in assessing your work.

Assignment Task

Introducing a new soft drink.

With an increased focus on health and cutting down on sugar, as well as concerns for the environment in terms of the use of plastic bottles, you have been employed as a marketing consultant for a soft drinks manufacturer and asked to advise on a new drink product aimed at a market segment of your choice in a country of your choice. The work must be entirely original and fully referenced.

The marketing manager has asked you to prepare an informal report explaining how you would market the new soft drink, and you are to submit your report containing the following three sections by the required deadline date:

Section 1 – Marketing Environment and Planning Process

  1. Explain the components of the marketing planning process and outline the marketing context for the new soft drink product, with particular reference to the role / importance of adopting a marketing orientation and its application to the business. (15 marks)
  • Carry out a brief environmental audit in the form of a PESTEL analysis for the new soft drink product ensuring that you detail specific market related facts that are fully referenced. Additionally, you should highlight relevant micro- environmental factors such as dominant competitors in the industry and recent competitor activity. (15 marks)
  • Outline* the extended marketing mix 7Ps and explain how the extended marketing mix contribute to effective marketing planning. (10 marks)

Section 2 – Segmentation, Targeting & Positioning

  1. Explain how the market for the new soft drink product might be segmented for consumer (B2C) and business (B2B) markets. To what extent do the approaches differ between B2C and B2B segmentation? (10 marks)
  • Discuss targeting methods that could be used for the B2C market and who you would primarily target with this new product in terms of characteristics including demographics, benefit, behavioural and lifestyle. (10 marks)
  • Explain what is meant by the term ‘positioning’ and suggest how the new soft drink product would be positioned in the minds of the target market. (10 marks)
