In this activity you will begin to understand the development and utilization of PICO questions for clinical cases. PICO questions are commonly utilized to drive clinical decision making and explore the best evidence to improve patient outcomes.
Instructions:
Develop a PICO question given the clinical case descriptions located below. Use the information embedded in each case scenario to search the literature and explore comparisons in treatments and outcomes for your population. You are free to make assumptions and expand upon the details provided as you develop your PICO question and search the literature. Each student should create their own individual PICO question.
Back pain or spine injuries: You are seeing a 46 y.o male construction worker after he acutely “threw out his back” two days ago. He is experiencing a great deal of pain with flexion movements of the spine, he has difficulty bending over to tie his shoes, and pain with driving, showering, and walking. Medications and rest are the only things that are able to control his pain. He would like to return to work as soon as possible so that he can continue to feed his family. You are looking to see what the body of evidence says about how to optimize recovery.
Submit your PICO question in this format:
- P-
- I-
- C-
- O-
- Attach the pdf of a quantitative article that helps you explore or answer your PICO question.
