1. Choose two of the views on freedom analyzed by Chaffee in sections 4.1 to 4.4. Explain the core of each position focusing on (1) the thesis on the nature and (non)existence of freedom/free-will, (2) the arguments in support of the thesis, (3) possible of objections to the thesis and/or its logical consequences. Do not forget to contrast and compare the two views and explain your own take on the issue by critically discussing them. (at least 2 full-pages) [3 points]
2. Explain the alleged reasons for which some philosophers and anthropologists have defended Cultural Relativism as a meta-ethical view (around a page). Then analyze Stace’s arguments to defend the thesis that there is at least one universal (non-relative to individuals or to particular cultures) ethical truth (“ethical absolutism”) (around a page). Which view do you find more plausible? Justify your view in detail (around a page). To answer this question, you need to master the material in Chaffee 8.2 and 8.3. [4 points]
3. In at least one page, explain the core features of one of the three normative ethical theories we discussed in class: Bentham and Mill’s utilitarianism, Kant’s ethics, or Sartre’s ethics. The relevant sections in Chaffee are 9.2, 9.3, and 9.3 respectively. [3 points]
Please PROOF-READ your essays. I will be discounting points for poor-writing. Set an appointment with the Writing Center if you have to. I’m sending you attached another document on how to write a philosophy paper. It’s more basic than the one I had uploaded to Blackboard, but you may just want to take a look.
