PASSIVE HOUSES: MY NOTES

The slides on the passive houses we visited are yet to be uploaded, hopefully they will be available by tomorrow.

Passive house- pasiv haus is a bramd name

However the main information are: we visited three passive houses in the same location, constructed by an architect who lives in one of them. They are constructed in an old derelict barn, and some of the old stone wall make up the features of the new passive houses, although they are mainly build from wood.

Each of the passive house run a different heating system: one is from stove, heat right through the house, heat supply for house seems good. It uses logs and is sourced locally. Solid fuel stove right in the middle making use of all heating. 2 filters- dust pollen. By product of heating-hot water. One small radiator 10 watts per metre

The second passive house uses wood pallets, similar to wood chip but small and uniform in size, so it is easy to move around the hopper system for boiler, similar to hillcrest just that they use woodchip and chips are a bit cheaper. Their pallets is supplied by weight which is different from hillcrest which is volume. Therefore has to take moisture of the pallets into consideration.

The third passive house run on air source heat pump

2 requirements needed to call your house a passive house

  • Mechanical Heat Recovery System (MHR) system. In the passive house that uses the stove there is a box which operates the airflow. The warm air out of the house passes through a chamber. The warm air going out pick up some of the heat, comes in warm and out cool. A fan in the living space pumps the air. In this system you make use of warm air and extract cold air out. No window. Need electricity 24/7
  • In a passive house you try and seal everything off: no leaky windows, letter boxes, cat flaps etc. build house as air tight as possible so it is not leaky and also is 10w/m2
  • 10m/m2x8760hrs 87,600 kh/annum         88 kwh / annum                      not right
  • 2 tonnes of soft wood
  • Passive house standard of 15 is hard to achieve
  • Thick rafters, thick walls and insulation, sized with occupancy of the building
  • Next to nothing for space heating, it is the future as so much energy goes into heating at the moment and most of it comes from fossil fuel
  • RHI- get money back for 7 years

Above are just my notes on passive house, I will upload slides as soon as they are made available. Also it will be very helpful if references can be used to back up some of these theories and that of hillcrest and the university.

Thanks
