Each student will fill out the Nursing Interventions Plan

Mr. Jones is a 60 year old African-American male employed full-time as a conference planner.  He works long hours, and travels about 15 days per month visiting clients across the country. That means a lot of time on airplanes and trains, and days full of meetings.  He finds it very stressful.  As for his diet, he tries to eat nutritiously, but he finds himself having to grab food at the airport if he’s rushing to catch the next flight.  He started smoking about a year ago because he finds it ‘relaxes’ him.

He has been married for 30 years and has two teenage children.  When he is home between business trips, his wife and kids encourage him to relax.  But he feels a lot of pressure to get things done around the house like repairs and bill paying.  So he has cut back on ‘extracurricular’ activities like going to the gym and bowling night with his buddies.

His wife has been very concerned about his schedule and stress level even when he is home.  She also is unhappy that he has started smoking.  Mr. Jones has not had a physical in several years because he ‘hasn’t felt sick’.  But at his wife’s request, he agrees to have a checkup. The lab results included the following:

B/P: 150/90

Pulse: 85

Fasting glucose: 130

Total cholesterol levels: 260

Triglycerides: 140

HDL: 39

LDL: 160

BMI: 28

When his physician expresses concern about the results, Mr. Jones is annoyed because he thinks these findings are just a normal part of aging and that there isn’t much he can do to change them.  Plus, he can’t imagine how he could build any lifestyle changes into his busy schedule.

As a nurse, develop a plan for health behavior change for Mr. Jones. Use the Health Planning Process on p. 122 in your textbook. Make sure to individualize your plan – that is, make sure the interventions you suggest fit with Mr. Jones’ lifestyle and health situation — and use current references.   This includes at least three articles from research journals.
