Make 25 significant observations for each chapter of the Book of Colossians – NIV
Grading Expectations
1. Observations must be typed up and submitted via Canvas prior to class on the assigned date.
2. Each observation must be a complete sentence, or you will not receive credit for it.
3. Each observation must be numbered.
4. Each observation must be clearly explained.
5. Each complete observation is worth one point.
Invalid Observations
1. Any kind of question – Questions are not observations
2. Making statements that are not in the text – like “a great thing is going to happen”
3. Making observations that do not contribute to the goal which is having information that will contribute to the interpretation – “There is an earth”
4. Making observations about things that we know very well, but not from the text we are working with “the Holy Spirit is the 3rd person of the Godhead”
5. Making interpretive statements: “the Holy Spirit is the source of power”
6. Counting the number of words or types of words (i.e., 3 verbs, 5 nouns)
7. Identifying the grammatical function of words without indicating the potential significance: “power is a noun”
8. Anything that might not be true: “they will be witnesses even in South America.”
9. Anything that is not certain from the text alone: “the speaker knows the listeners”.
10. Noting punctuation and use of capital letters.
