This assignment assesses the following outcomes:
- Research and analyze the role of World War I in shaping the history of one region of the world, outside of Europe
As you read about in Neiberg, saw in the PBS special Lawrence of Arabia, and viewed in the World War I in Photos: Global Conflict (Links to an external site.), World War I was not just confined to Europe. This ripple effect brought death and warfare to people’s otherwise unaffected by the machinations of Europe, and turned a foolish affair in the Balkans into a truly world war.
Choose one of the following theaters of war:
- German East Africa, South-West Africa, Togoland, and Cameroon
- British South Africa
- Armenians in the Ottoman Empire
- The Suez Canal
- Palestine
- The Pacific islands and Japan
In a research paper of approximately 1000-1250 words (about 4-5 pages), write an essay considering the following points:
- How did the European politics of World War I affect the region you chose?
- Can the effect of World War I still be seen in this region today?
- How did the people of these regions use the war to advance their own agendas?
Be as specific as possible in your answers, and draw upon evidence to support your arguments. In addition to using the assigned materials from the course, you must also use at least 3 outside sources.
For outside material, you can find scholarly secondary sources from…(this wil be shared with the assigned writer). You should NOT use non-scholarly websites such as Wikipedia or History.com. If you have questions about appropriate sources, please contact your instructor.
Your paper should include:
- An introduction paragraph with a clear thesis statement outlining your overall argument
- Body paragraphs with specific evidence from your sources to support your points
- In-text citations and references in APA style
- A conclusion paragraph that synthesizes the information you present and summarizes your main points
