Learning Lab: In Class Group Experience

Demonstration of a task-oriented group approach.  Co-leaders will rotate weekly.

As a whole class group

  • Students will collaboratively decide which type of task-oriented group the Learning Lab will be
    • Issues to consider
      • The setting where the group will be held
      • What type of group is it (support, skill-building, etc.)?
      • What are your goals for the group? What format will be best – an open or closed group
  • Students will pair up as co-leaders.   Weekly, different co-leaders are responsible for co-facilitating the group and developing an exercise for that week.
  • Each member of the group must develop a group member role play including the type of group member you will role play for example are you the dominant” group member, a “talker”, a complainer”, a “flirtatious” member.  Group members are responsible to interact with in all weeks of the group as their respective roles.

Midterm Assignment based on the Learning Lab

Reflective Log:

Create a log in which you will include your ongoing reactions to the learning lab as well as class discussion and required course reading.  Write your entries weekly throughout the semester and date each entry indicating if you were the co-leader or group member. This will inform your midterm.

Here are some guidelines for the log:

  • Formulate your own questions and ideas, assessment the group experience and express them even when you can only be tentative and speculative.
  • Permit yourself to make mistakes and to express them in your writing.
  • Each log should include discussion of the group and how the group related to key concepts from a required reading.

Reflective paper: 5-8 pages APA style at least 5 references from syllabus reading  or references you find related to groups (written assignment grade)

Use the log to inform your midterm paper.  Your paper needs to include the following aspects from your log including the following:

  • How you experienced all aspects of the group. Remember it is a self-reflective paper
    • Discuss your experience from initiation to termination
  • Make connections between theories, concepts and ideas and your practice experiences. Make sure to site the syllabus readings throughout the paper to support your comments.
