Question 4, part 4 5 pages
Discuss the contradictory relationship between slavery and capitalism in the US during the first half of the nineteenth century. First explain both how slavery was essential to the development of capitalism in the north and how its contradiction with capitalism would lead to the civil war. (This is the most difficult and most extensive part of the question. There are at least five broad questions/ issues you need to address. 1) The essence of the conflict the develops between the capitalist class and the slave holding class, as it relates to the question of labor; 2) why the issue of the expansion of slavery could not be managed by the 1840s and 1850s, even though north and south had been able manage this issue earlier with both the north west ordinances and the Missouri compromise; 3) the conflict that develops between north and south, over federal power; 4) how the divergent cultural development between North and South, along with a conflict of interests between the sections made compromise- and even meaningful dialogue over the issue of slavery- virtually impossible by the 1850s; 5) how the conflict over slavery broke down the Second Part system and replaced it with a new party system based on section.) Then explain how slavery could continue and even thrive in the U.S. when it was dying out just about everywhere else in the western hemisphere. (Hint: one of the things you need to discuss here is Paternalism.) Finally, explain why white people of all classes in the capitalist north were opposed to the expansion of slavery, but at the same time were also staunchly anti- abolitionist.
