Internship Smart Goal Setting
A goal represents an object of a person’s ambition. Like most people, I have objectives I plan on achieving as a result of my ambition. Working with Masscon International Incorporated as a sales assistant has helped me take significant steps to achieving them. I had three main goals when I started my internship at the company: Develop my understanding for the tourism industry, increase the customer base, and gain maturity and professionalism. Over the course of the internship, I have managed to make significant progress in all these goals. First, I have compiled a list of the most popular tourist destinations and identified what most clients are looking for in a destination. This activity has helped me better understand the tourism industry and the current trends in the market. Through my Instagram account, I have been able to post interesting, cheap, and beautiful destinations. As a result, there has been an overall positive reaction as well as new clients. The increase in returned customers can also be attributed to the suggested discount offers on the account. Overall, l I feel less confused, more mature, and confident when dealing with clients. In linking academic theory to practice and demonstrating awareness of community, I have grown professionally. Indeed, with the various inputs that I have made during my internship, I am confident I will meet all my original goals.
Understanding how the industry works has been an interesting experience for me. I have progressed relatively well in this part of my goal. I take every single day as a learning experience building on yesterday’s understanding of the logistics involved. Furthermore, my understanding of e-commerce platform has been pivotal in helping me observe and understand the industry. Therefore, the internship offered me an opportunity to work in the industry and understand it from first experience.
Nevertheless, it has not all been a smooth ride since I have encountered a few challenges along the way. I have not always been fairly treated as an intern. Sometimes, employees have a low morale, which is directly related to the management principle of esprit de corps. Receiving different treatment has been a major obstacle in my path it comes from both the work place and the clients. In relation to the principles of management, this is in direct violation of the equity principle. Therefore, despite the great learning opportunity, unfair treatment remains a major challenge to my development.
There are possible solutions to these challenges. To improve office morale, managers should offer incentives and rewards to certain work achievements. They can also put more lively and motivating decorations to improve the working atmosphere. The two solutions will increase competition in the work place as well improving the morale of the employees. However, extreme competition can be a con by bringing animosity in the work environment. Personally, to improve the work morale I would cheer people up with motivational quotes. For fair and equal treatment of all employees, even interns, the company should start a sensitization campaign. All employees will feel comfortable and in return increasing their productivity.
Looking back, working at the company has been an overall great experience and I would not change a thing. Things are in good order and I fear that if I changed something, I may not have been able to make such progress. The original three goals are in line with ultimately enabling to open and run a successful chain of tourism agencies. Thus, I do not feel the need to change them.
