Some people who have lived in only one country, such as the United States, may not even realize the similarities and differences in health care around the world. In this assignment, you will explore health care in different countries.
To prepare for this assignment, read the following from your course text, Introduction to U.S. Health Care:
- Chapter 1, “The U.S. Health Care System”
You may also view the complete American Medical Student Association’s International Health Care Systems Primer Outline and peruse the American Medical Student Association Web sites to find the leading causes of death. You may also search the Internet for additional information on causes of death, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention—Leading Causes of Death and World Health Organization—Top Ten Causes of Death.
To get started on this assignment, you will first need to identify a country other than the U.S. that you want to explore for the remainder of the course. If you live in a country other than the U.S., please choose that one. If you are living in the U.S., you may choose any country that interests you. You may choose any country you like from anywhere in the world. If you need help in choosing, you can explore Web sites such as the American Medical Student Association’s International Health Care Systems Primer Outline. It presents a brief overview of the health care systems of six countries: Sweden, Canada, Japan, the Netherlands, France, and Germany.
To ensure that you are exposed to as many countries as possible, your Instructor will assign you to a country and a group. Please nominate your first and second request for your country choice, and identify why you have a special interest in your choices.

Use this Request a Country Discussion Board to submit two choices for a country that will be assigned to you. The assigned country will be the basis for many course assignments this term.
Request at least two and explain why you would like to study one of these countries. If you live in a country other than the U.S., please request that one and explain that you live there.

The subject field for your posting should indicate your choices. For example, if Sally Ride’s first choice were Italy and her second choice were Zimbabwe, the subject for her posting would be “1-Italy, 2-Zimbabwe.” The text of the posting would then elaborate on her special interest and rationale for choosing these particular countries.
