Discussion Board: Fieldwork Assignment #1 and #2: Implementing a Tomlinson Instructional Strategy and a Lemov Technique
These two discussion boards are worth more points than the standard forums, as they both involve a fieldwork component. Please get started on these assignments at least a week or two in advance.
Part One:
For each week’s board, you will first implement a mini-lesson in your classroom, allowing you the opportunity to try out the ideas we’re learning about in Lemov and Tomlinson. You can either teach the mini-lesson to the whole classroom or to a small group.
Note: If you are not teaching in a classroom this year, then I’d encourage you to reach out to the cohort – I’m sure that your colleagues would be happy to have you come teach a small group in their classrooms!
Here are the directions to the fieldwork implementation:
Design a mini-lesson, using the format below. (This is a format that I often use when I’m not teaching a full, scripted lesson plan…. This is a simple “I do, We do, You do” lesson plan. This format is short and sweet, but also helps me to approach the lesson in a strategic manner):
Mini-lesson Format: Gradual Release of Responsibility: *
CCSS/GLEs:
SMART Objective: **
“I do” (Modeling/Direct Teaching):
“We do” (Guided Practice/Small Group or Partner Work):
“You do” (Independent Practice):
Assessment(s) used:
Lemov Technique(s) used:
Tomlinson Instructional Strategy(ies) used:
– Select at least one Lemov technique and one Tomlinson instructional strategy to use in your mini-lesson. The Tomlinson strategies can be found in Chapter 7 and 8 of our text.
*Gradual Release of Responsibility:

Part Two:
Once you’ve implemented your mini-lesson, you are ready to compose your post for this discussion board. Your post should respond to the following prompts:
- Share with us your mini-lesson format
- What Lemov technique(s) did you use? Tomlinson instructional strategy(ies)? How did you use these? How did it go?
- How did you assess your students throughout the lesson? Did you use diagnostic, formative, and/or summative assessments? How will you use the data gathered to inform your instruction in the future?
- How did you differentiate in your mini-lesson? Did you differentiate by content, process, and/or product? By readiness levels, student interest, or learning profiles (multiple intelligences)? ****
- Share with us your “glows” and “grows” from the mini-lesson implementation. What went well? What would you do differently next time?

Part Three:
As your final step, please read through your peers’ posts, providing constructive feedback, encouragement, and any questions.
