The Dowding, et al article on the impact of home care nurse’s numeracy and graph literacy brings out several issues. The first is how data are represented in a user interface. Have you had experiences where an information technology system has presented data in ways you find too complex, or perhaps open to misinterpretation? Do you have preferred ways to see visual representation of data? A second point is how data are shared and interpreted across a care team — particularly when coordinating care in different locations. How should the data depiction deal with the variety of skills, experience and preferences across a care team? Is there adequate training for nurses in data interpretation across multiple representation schema? A third point is using data and information technology outside the setting of the “4-walls of a clinic.” Should special consideration be given to these informatics components in non-clinic settings?
