- Provided a rich and detailed summary about findings from the observations conducted of target children to identify interests and needs.
- Provided a rich and detailed statement describing the outcomes of the meeting with cooperating teacher.
- The rationale for the unit was clearly stated and provided a detailed description about how it meets the developmental needs and interest of the group.
- A detailed reflective statement on selecting a developmentally appropriate theme for a unit was provided.
Guideline from the Professor:
- In the first part, you needed to:
- Begin by selecting a target age group at the setting where you are placed.
- Provide a description about the developmental characteristics of the target group including languages, ethnic groups, and special needs.
- Observe the children and informally talk with some of them to find out about topics of their interest.
- Write down your findings. Based on your observations and interactions, prepare a list about the children’s interests
- You specified how the teacher makes sure to include all areas of development to meet the children’s needs. I am assuming that this first part of your paper is the result of your observations in the class. If you see syllabus page 14, you will notice that these observations included a conversation that needs to happen between you and them to find out what their interests are. You also had to include a list of the children’s needs and choose a theme after the conversation you had with the teacher. Please see above list which comes directly from syllabus page 14.
- In the second part, you were supposed to meet with the cooperating teacher and talk about concepts and themes appropriate for the target group.
- Consult with the teacher about possible topics to develop the unit and areas to integrate using social studies as the focus of the activities.
- Share your findings from the observations and conversations with children.
- Choose a theme to serve as the focus for your unit.
- Provide a brief statement describing the outcomes of your consultation with the teacher and how it contributed to selecting the theme for the unit
Please make sure to complete the above section
- In the third part, you needed to write a rationale for the theme that you selected
. Identify the reasons for your selection (What guided the selection of the topic?)..
- . Identify the reasons for your selection (What guided the selection of the topic?).
- . Include in your rationale, a description about how the theme responds to the children’s interests and developmental characteristics (In what way does the theme match the children’s needs and interest?).
I think you met the goal, as you effectively described the importance of the theme from the children’s and the teacher’s perspective. 🙂
- 4. In the fourth part, you needed to:
- Provide a reflective statement describing what you gained from the theme experience of selecting a developmentally appropriate theme for a unit.
- Describe how it will contribute to your knowledge on planning based on the children’s developmental characteristics including their needs and interests.
- Comment on how the collaboration with the cooperating teacher assisted you and informed your planning process
In this area, you discussed why is important to use developmentally appropriate practice. Based in your reflection I am assuming that your theme is related with children’s identity with their culture, religion, nationality etc.? Am I correct? I want to make sure because in next assignments you are going to elaborate on this topic and actually create a lesson plan for the class.
