Sports Federations are registered with international sports federations and are guided by the said bodies, however many times Government takes care of the National team expenses when the national team is to represent the country
the Government role is limited in the process save for expenses and blame when the team underperforms, the federations are mainly managed by corrupt individuals who take advantage of the weak setup.
FIFA, for instance, gives its affiliate associations funding to grow football at the grass-root level, many federations don’t use these funds as expected and cook up books and claim expenses on the National team. Sponsors also come on board and the government.
In the process, the federation losses focus on its core mandate to promote football at the grass-root level, government and sponsors’ loss on ill-prepared national teams.
Its, therefore important that the national government takes over the management of the national team through the creation of a board and incorporates the CEO of the football federation into the board to facilitate and communicate on the fixtures.
This will enable the federation to focus on its core mandate and use FIFA funding rightly and be more accountable.
It also allows the government to be more responsive and better prepared, to marshal sponsors for the national team.
Football is a very social game and the government can use it to empower its youth and it should, therefore, take its management over and only have coordination with the football federation after all the team is a representative of the country and not the federation.
