“Put yourself in the period and pretend that you are writing for a local paper on the topic of the day: Are the Colonists Free–Riding off the British? Is Witchcraft Destroying the Fabric of the Nation and the Economy? Is Jonathan Edwards a Fear Monger that is ruining the Colonial Economy? Colonists need to rise up over Boston Massacre? Are Backwoods Farmers Overreacting with Whiskey Rebellion? Is the Quebec Act Fair? You Are Not Staying in my House–Colonists Should say No to Quartering Acts; Should Fed Bail Out Ailing Economy? Do we Need a National Bank? Are Horses Causing Too Much Pollution in Our Cities? Give Colonial Women the Right to Vote; and so on. “
MY TOPIC IS: Ford efficiency wages. here is a brief summary of my paper, (I did it in journal entry format) It needs to be detailed and from my POV as if im in the time period. there also needs to be a significant amount of economic theories, (incentives, efficiency wages, productiveness & whatever else you think will fit). use sources as needed, but no direct quotes or anything like that. it needs to be historically accurate and include a lot of history from that time period.

July 16th 1913

Today I got a job at a factory. It’s the Ford Motor Company assembly plant. I make $2.43 for working a 9 hour day. That’s the going rate so it’s nothing special. Helen found out she’s pregnant with our 3rd child yesterday. I don’t know how we’re going to afford that. Helen is doing a great job staying at home with our 2 kids, she cooks and cleans. I’m pretty excited about this new job, but of course i wish i made more. We’re thinking of moving out of Kansas City, maybe elsewhere i can make more money. I made the same $2.43 at my old job, so the money didn’t change, only the job. I’m just hoping there’s more opportunities for a guy like me here.

September 22nd 1913

I’ve been at this job a little over 2 months. Things are good, but im getting bored. I’m losing motivation. I go to work everyday, but I’ve stopped working hard. I do the bare minimum to keep my job. My friend charles says his job is hiring at $2.43 a day so I can always work there if I lose my job here. What’s the point of working hard when everyone else pays the same? I’ve made a friend here at work, his name is john. Supposedly he knows someone who knows Henry Ford. I doubt it though. The kids are good, joseph is almost old enough to start working, that extra help would be nice. I still don’t know how we will make it with a third child, but I’m sure everything will end up okay.

December 15th 1913

Today, John and I were talking about how much more productive we would be if we made more money. Maybe i would try harder. I just have no pride in my work, what im doing is so simple. Now I don’t even go to work a couple days a month. Honestly most days i’m late. I’ve seen people get hired and quit soon after. Everyone i started with has already quit. There are constantly people being trained. When I go to work, all I can think about is how much we are going to struggle when our 3rd child comes. Im distracted. John and I talked about how we would do anything to make more money, not drink alcohol, make sure things are okay at home, keep the house clean, and even put some money in savings.

January 5th 1914

John must have told his friend who told henry ford about our idea. Today we got a bonus $2.70, which takes us to $5 a day! We get it if we meet the requirements that john and i came up with. I don’t even care that i didn’t get credit for this idea, because now i make enough money. The line outside the plant today was incredible, i’ve never seen so many people asking for a job. Good thing i didn’t quit. I definitely couldn’t make this much money anywhere else. The boss had to come out and make everyone leave. People were coming from all over to try and work here, but they said if you havent lived in Kansas City for 6 months then you aren’t eligible. This is absolutely crazy, this will solve everything. Helens going to be so happy. I never want to lose this job, I’m going to work so hard, go in early, be more productive, and never miss another day. Maybe I’ll even have enough money to buy a Model T soon.

The idea of the efficiency wage theory is that increasing wages can lead to increased labour productivity.
Therefore if firms increase wages – some or all of the higher wage costs will be recouped through increased staff retention and higher labour productivity.
Reasons higher wages increase labor productivity:
Fear of losing jobs
Loyalty
Lower costs of supervision
Attract higher quality labour
Nutritional theories
Limitations of efficiency wage theory:
many factors determine worker morale and productivity, wages are just one of them. Often other factors are more important such as work conditions, management, e.t.c. If non-wage factors are negative, then higher wages may be insufficient to boost productivity.
It depends on the reaction of other firms. If other firms also start paying above market clearing levels, then the gain from attracting best quality workers will be lost.

he didn’t need particularly skilled workers; he just needed ones who would do the same repetitive, specialized tasks hour after hour, day after day.
